Never use a score as sole evidence
False positives and false negatives are unavoidable. A high score is not proof of AI use, and a low score does not prove that a text is entirely human-written.
Look at the writing process
- Review outlines, drafts, citations, and revision history.
- Compare the work with the student's established writing where appropriate.
- Ask the student to explain an argument, source, or revision choice.
- Apply your institution's published policy consistently.
Have a conversation
Start with curiosity rather than accusation. Give the student a meaningful chance to explain their process and provide supporting material.
